Tourist spots in Spiti Valley

Lahaul and Spiti are full of surprises. There are many beautiful locations spread across the valley. The most important out of them is Kaza. There are many places in Kaza where you can relax for a while.

Kaza

Not only the destination but the complete journey is unforgettable. It is a small town located on the bank of river Spiti at an altitude of 12,500 feet. The small market in Kaza has almost everything you need. It has restaurants, cloth shops, souvenir shops, grocery shops, wine shops, automobile repair shops and many hotels are available in around the market. In fact Kaza is full of hotels, guest houses and homestays. The climate here is cold throughout the year. So, sitting in a restaurant or a shop and enjoying a hot cup of tea or bowl of hot soup helps you to loosen up.

Sakya Tangyud Monastery, located in the heart of Kaza is a must-visit place. It is a beautiful red coloured building decorated with multiple designs. The place is very peaceful and calm. Many lambas stay in campus and practice religious rituals.

Spare some time to enjoy the natural beauty. The village is located at an elevation from the river. Sit next to the river Spiti and enjoy the mesmerizing beauty. One can buy Tibetian flags and souvenirs from the market.

Key Monastery and village

The monastery is one of the oldest centers of religion and culture in the valley. It is about 1000 years old and has many ancient things i.e. Rare manuscripts, stucco images, peculiar wind instruments and a collection of weapons. It is a perfect place to learn Buddhism hundreds of lambas completed their religious training here in the monastery. By the passage of time, it has become a synonym for Spiti and Kaza. It is located in an ancient, small, beautiful village at a distance of about 14 km from Kaza. The monastery is located on the top of a hill surrounded by gigantic mountains, at an altitude of about 13,500 feet.

Kibber Village

It is another beautiful mountain village located at an altitude of 14,200 feet. It has a small monastery and a widespread wildlife sanctuary next to the village. The sanctuary is spread in an area of 14000 sq km. It is the main center for study, spot and photograph Himalayan wildlife. It is famous for blue sheep and Iibex. Chicham bridge is located next to the village.

Key and Kibber are located on the same side. Kaza is 14 Kms away from Key village and monastery. The same road leads to Kibber, Kibber is about 7 Kms from Key. Further Chicham bridge is about 3 kms away from Kibber.

Hikkim Village

This village is located at an altitude of 14,400 feet. It is famous for the worlds’s highest post office. One can visit the post office during working hours and post some beautiful postcards to their postal address as souvenirs.

Komic Village

This village is located at an altitude of 15,050 feet. It is the highest village in the world connected with motorable road. The views around are magnificent. Kaza is 15 km away from Hikkim village and the same road leads to Komic village. Komic is about 3 km from Hikkim.

Dhankar Village and monastery

This beautiful village is located at an altitude of 12,700 feet. It has one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries of the valley. The monastery here is about 1000 years old. It is located on the top of a hill. It is located on the way to Shimla. At a distance of about 25 kms from Kaza, Shichling village is located on the main road. From Shichling take a turn towards Dhankar village. It is further 10 km away from the main road. The Dhankar lake is located at a distance from the village.

Tabo Village

his ancient village is located at a distance of 45 kms from Kaza on the way to Shimla. It has one of the oldest monastery of the valley. The monastery is known as chogs-hkhor (doctrinal circle). The monastery served as the main center of culture and religion for centuries. It was constructed in 996 AD. It has elegant murals and stucco sculptures. These resemble with the paintings of Ajanta and Elora caves. Tabo is also known as Himalayan Ajanta.
